History of the Royal Thai Consulate-General, Xi'an

 

          The Kingdom of Thailand and the People's Republic of China established diplomatic relations on 1 July 1975. Since then, the two countries, both governmental leval and people-to-people level, are always in close and cordial relationship.

 

          Apart from opening Embassy in each other's capital city in 1976, since 1989 both countries have opened Consulate-Generals in each other's important cities. China has opened 2 Consulate-Generals, located in Chiang Mai Province and Songkhla Province. Thailand has opened 9 Consulate-Generals, located in Kunming, Guangzhou, Shanghai, Nanning, Chengdu, Xi'an, Xiamen, Qingdao and Hong Kong.

 

          The Royal Thai Consulate-General, Xi'an is responsible for 3 provinces in the Northwestern China, namely, Shaanxi Province, Gansu Province and Ningxia Hui Autonomous Region. Brief timeline of the Consulate-General are as follows:

 

          28 June 2005 Cabinet of Thailand approved the opening of the Royal Thai Consulate-General, Xi'an

 

          1 July 2005 Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Thailand and China exchanged Letter of Consent on opening Consular Affairs Office of Thailand in Xi'an. This Consular Affairs Office was under the supervision of the Royal Thai Embassy in Beijing.

 

          18 March 2006 Mr. Chainarong Keratiyutwong, Head of Consular Affairs Office of Thailand in Xi'an, assumed official duty.

 

          28 November 2006 Opening Ceremony of the Consular Affairs Office of Thailand in Xi'an presided over by H.E. Mr. Sawanit Kongsiri, Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs of Thailand and Mr. Yuan Chunqing, Governor of Shaanxi Province.

 

          29 December 2007 Mr. Vasin Ruangprateepsaeng succeeded Mr. Chainarong as the Head of Consular Affairs Office of Thailand in Xi'an

 

          20 May 2008 The Consular Affairs Office of Thailand in Xi'an was upgraded to the Royal Thai Consulate-General, Xi'an. Mr. Vasin also changed his position to Deputy Consul-General, Acting Consul-General of Thailand to Xi'an.
